I purchases what I thought is a Elgin 2Hp. And it says Elgin 2 on the side... The guy that sold it to me said it was old...
It ran OK when I got it. But I put a carb kit in and cleaned the tank. It has lots of compression. (I haven't checked with the gauge yet.)
I got the carb kit form a small engine repair shop. I just told the guy that the engine was a Tecumseh 2 hp 2 stroke without a bowl on the carb. It fit perfectly. (He didn't even look up the part#. Just walked to a shelf and pulled the kit out...)
I'd like to find some info on this motor.
I want to service the lower end but it looks to be unserviceable. Except for one screw down there. (I haven't undone the screw yet...)
So I go on line and look up 2 HP Elgin OB motors and find tones of info! Great!
Except I can't find anything that resembles my Elgin 2....?
So I googled around... and found the Clinton chief 2hp.... It looks similar but different.

Tecumshe manufactured power heads for Eska Outboards which in turn made engines under private labels for various retailers including Sears Canada. These engines were actually rated for 3HP. The Elgin name was discontinued by Sears in 1963 but Eska production continued well after that. Could very well be that some engines could have been retrofitted with engines used for lawnmowers.

Dunno, Marty.. looks kind of like an Elgin engine on an Eska leg and lower unit. Since they both used Tecumseh engines at some point, I think that would be possible. The transom clamps are really nice and look custom made or more likely, aftermarket; much finer angle adjustment than is normal. Prop is probably screwed on with right handed threads. Ya might be able to get it off by locking the engine and (carefully and gently, but forcefully) turning the prop counterclockwise? Good video. I don't know about servicing the lower unit.. the cone under the prop might unscrew from the foot, allowing access to the seals/bearings/gears. The lower unit looks like it separates just above the anti-cavitation plate, so that one screw locks it in place somehow. My thoughts (and worth just about what ya paid for them) .. Happy hunting!

I will take a closer look at it in the coming days.
I do know that the leg joins just above anti-cavitation plate.
The mount is nice! Not the usual amount of thought went into it. It is a mass produced piece though.
Did Sears own the Elgin name?
I'm wondering if in 63 when they stopped getting OB's by then McCulleah. If they just asked Eska to make the 2hp.

It is called a Tecumseh OB clamp bracket.
The adjustment looks similar. (I have never seen another like these.) And the gripping ridges are similar ware it grips the back of the transom.

That looks almost like it. Except for the tiler handle and color.

Here is the # off the tag on the motor -636-08 and below it is 4417437
I can't seem to find manufactures that used those #'s. Also when I search the Sears site I get a washing machine electric motor with the 636-08.
Here is a picture of the tag on the motor. (The only #'s I`ve been able to find on the thing too.)

I found something. A sticker! It has a serial # on it and other stuff. No model # though...
I can't believe I overlooked this! Really its on the mount under the carb and motor. (I rebuilt the carb... One would think I would look there.... Nope.)
I still can't find much in any info on the OB on the Elgin site.....? It might be a 5hp Elgin made in 65. Or not....
