Is it possible to dye the fabric (with success) on existing cabin cushion covers? Our covers are cotton blend with button detail and vinyl backs.

They are currently a faded red/ burgundy and we would like to go dark grey or blue.

Am I dreaming?

Thanks,

oh gosh, red burgundy dyed dark grey or blue sounds like you will get mud color! I think if I were going to attempt something like that, it would have to be in the same family of color or at the very minimum a much deeper color than what is there.

I would start fresh really, can't imagine it would be pleasant to look at..... :(

I would tend to agree. Unless you bleached them white to start, you will proabaly not get the color you desire. Material is inexpensive enough to do it yourself. Start with the smallest cushion to practice. If you have a machine, its not that difficult just time consuming. Make it a winter project.

I had my cushions redone by an upholstery school. Their common technique was to staple the fabric to a wood backing. No problem here, why not go with the flow? I patterned and cut plywood backs for all my cushions, provided the school with my fabric of choice (100% synthetic), matching thread (also synthetic), vinyl to cover the backs and stainless staples. Long term, I think the wood backing will hold the cushion shape better.

I believe with a little guidance an amateur could produce perfectly acceptable results.
