So, I found my bilge pump went out on me a few weeks back and over the course of a week or two, it filled with water. I'm still tracking down the source of the water, but it looks like it combined with some kitty food that found it's way down there and made a science project. I've dried it out, and tried simple green as well as dish soap, but the residue has more of a wax consistency and nothing seems to be working. Ideas??

Try very hot water and dawn dish soap first.

I've had good luck with

the citrus Goof Off cleaner. Not the petroleum based stuff. It's at Home Depot.

Purple power, works like a dream on everything I've used it on.

This pic, and the three after it show why I like purple power (cleanrite.com)
http://picasaweb.google.com/merc2dogs/Triton#5337315845697379442

I spent hours trying to clean a small section in the Triton and hardly made a dent in it with scrapers, scrub brushes and various other cleaners. the only cleaner the local store had was pp, brought it home mixed it 3:1 in a garden sprayer (water:pp) soaked down the area under the cockpit, went above to get my deck brush, and when I came back down it was nearly spotless with all the crud in a puddle on the bottom of the sump.

I have never noticed any effects with bronze, but if you let it sit for a while on aluminum it blackens it, and will soften some paints. so I make sure to rinse it quickly.

quote from page:
Purple Power Industrial Strength Cleaner/Degreaser is Certified Biodegradable by the Scientific Certification Systems. It is biodegradable, phosphate-free and non-flammable. Purple Power has been rated as the #1 Selling Cleaner/Degreaser in the automotive retail market since 2003.

Yeah, I know I sound like a salesman, but I have no connection at all with them, and do recommend it.

Yes, more heat. If it is a waxy grease/tallow, common in pet foods, heat is the thing

Without heat to soften it and get he degreasers into it, they can't work. Of course, don't use heat with the solvent or citrus based cleaners. Some of those can get flammable or at least make the air unbreathable.

Also consider oven cleaner. I have used it on cases like that. VERY alkaline, so what where it goes, but it will eat the grease and not harm the FRP.

Be sure to read the label on all the "citrus" based cleaners...the cleaning agent in most of them is actually mineral spirits and the citrus part is mostly advertising.

Very true!

D-limonine (citrus oil) is many times more expensive, and many use just enough to get the smell. Not than mineral spirits won't work or that it is much different. The new odorless mineral spirits are much safer in health terms, as most of the aromatic (toxic) content has been removed to comply with clean air rules. It isn't your old paint thinner.
