Not a very informative article but I have to assume the autopilot just wasn't working properly. I'm not sure I'd set off on a journey like that just a few days after taking delivery of a boat. Hopefully the boat can be repaired quickly.

Let's see how that turns out.

I think the "...around 4 a.m. ..." part and the "The sole sailor..." part tells me all I needed to know to understand how this happened.

I guess its easier to blame the inanimate object for failure.
corollary - “seamanship requires attention, participation and anticipation”.

don’t know who said that but he has a point.
Yeah! I should have put "Accident" in air quotes when I titled this thread.

That's really what I was thinking when I read the article, seems fairly predictable. If the autopilot turned to port instead of starboard he may have gotten away with it, he had a 50% chance.

I wonder if the skipper blames himself or the autopilot more. I suspect (hope) there is inward reflection trying to understand what he could do to avoid this in the future. I am an optimist and have (admittedly unfounded) faith in humanity.

This reminds me of a time fishing. The boat was a 30? runabout with big twins. Once we cleared the breakwater the owner throttled it up and set the AP. He then proceeded to walk about the boat. There were boats everywhere and we were flying. I sat close to the controls.

Remember that joke when cruise control was first available on cars? The punch line had to do with a party in the back seat.
