anode placement

Hi all, I have been meaning to ask this question for some time and have just gotten around to it. I have noticed on my Vega there are two anodes. One on the prop shaft and the other located internal on my Yanmar. This does not seem like enough considering other boats in my area have more attached. I have seen many sailboats with anodes attached to the rudder to prevent shaft corrosion. Is the Vega supposed to have this option, or is it not needed. Has anybody attached one with good results? Do you have anodes attached in other areas? Now would be the time to find out while my boat is on the trailer. Thanks...

Hi Tim, Are you sure your Yanmar has a anode? My 2GM doesn't by design and I think you said you have a 1GM? I do need to replace the bottom "peg" on my rudder blade as it is looking somewhat pitted. Think of is as a hinge pin that sits on the bronze shoe
and the rudder sits on top of. It I can't think of any way to attach a zinc to it though. The rudder shaft where it goes into the boat has always looked fine. As far as other zincs go most folks also have one on the prop nut as well as the shaft.

anodes are really important if your boat sits in the water all the time.
I believe there are electrical currents from other boats, chargers, and dock electrical wiring that does this.
Also, I think it matters if your boat is plugged in to the dock power... this makes it worse.
But its always good to be safe. Mine only has them on the shaft and prop.
There also may be one in your heat exchanger in the motor. It will likely be like a plug. Where you screw it in. The Beta has that.. Look for it in the yanmar.

Hi Walt, The Yanmar 1GM10 has a small anode on the port side upper cylinder head that lay inside the water jacket that is cooled by raw water. My prop does not have a zinc nut. Its a 3 blade 12RH10. I dont know the manufacturer. Sounds like your gudgeon and pintle are starting to corrode. I wonder what the inside of the rudder looks like. Mine look OK for now but a zinc sure would be helpful in preventative maintenance. I wonder if anybody has found a way to attach an anode. From: "walt judy brown allore bestvega@... I think the situation is when you are in the water and all your neighboors are plugged in to shore power. And you are also plugged into shore power. Everybodys electricity goes all the way down the dock on the wires, and back up. Supply and return. It ends up that everybodys boat is an electrical contact in the water. And everybody has a slightly diferent voltage. This makes a big giant battery out of the whole marina. Each boat having a littile tiny charge flowing between boats. Carrying minerals from your metal to and fro. Dont plug your boat in. Get yourself a solar panel like i did. and a charge controller.
