We are currently in Chesapeaks City, Md and plan to be in Annapolis Friday and Saturday. Looking for recommended anchorages and/or moorings. Prevailing winds are forecast to be NW.

Hello TimR,

Welcome to the upper Chesapeake Bay. You might be just on the canal side of the RT 213 bridge at Chesapeake City if my guess is correct. A walk in South Chesapeake City is worth the time. Antique shops, restaurants, and the canal museum (weekends only, I think).

Annapolis......contact the harbormaster (channel 9, I think) and go beyond the Spa Creek bridge to the area by St Mary's if acceptable. Ask whether 40 ft boats can use those moorings. They will be the most calm in a breeze. You could anchor farther up that creek if you choose to skip the moorings. If you do not go there they might suggest Eastport moorings. Whitehall Creek is nice as an anchorage, but far from downtown. The Spa Creek bridge is on the hour and half hour in the summer maybe on request now.

If you need parts Bacon Associates is a long bike ride or a short taxi tide up past the Capitol complex and on out the street whose name I sadly forget.

Enjoy the city.

Thanks Phil. That is where we are. We walked around town yesterday and ended up at the Deck bar. Today we met my parents for lunch who came down from PA. Tomorrow we hope to get out early and sail down the bay and stay somewhere north of Annapolis. Then Annapolis on Friday.

Quit your whining Don! Believe it or not we were sorry we missed the first snowfall last week. We plan to take a break from the Bahamas this winter and seek out the white stuff somewhere.

Tim- The only time we wee in Annapolis we were allowed to anchor off the Naval Academy. I seem to remember that it is marked as restricted but the harbormaster gave us permission. It was at the Annapolis Boat Show. It was a short dinghy ride in to the town docks.

There are oodles of open moornings in the harbor. As said, there are more just above the Spa Creek bridge, I think 5 bucks cheaper? Last time in town, there were slips or beam-to the bulkhead in the Ego Alley channel. The pumpout boat is still running, and can be reached on 17, as can the Harbormaster. Did you want to be a short row to town? Or maybe over on Back Creek/Eastport, which is where I live. Our Beneteau Club has the fall luncheon at O'Learys on Saturday noon-ish. Dinner Fri/Sat?

Here is the Thomas Point Light House hourly weather report:
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=tplm2 . Broad Creek on the Magothy is good for NW winds. I sent an email.

A couple of notes that might be of use:

The moorings beyond the spa creek bridge can only take boats up to 35'. The main field (before the bridge) take up to 45' - and cost $35. There are a few other mooring fields that can take a 40' boat:
http://www.annapolis.gov/government/city-departments/harbormaster/facilities

As noted, the harbormaster is on channel 17.

We have anchored off the navy wall, but it was rolly. I recommend the moorings, or anchoring in back creek or further up spa creek.

I would take a mooring in the main harbor outside of the Spa Creek Bridge. This time of year there are bound to be plenty. Being right in the thick of it is hands down the best way to do the town. Although the forecast is for a bit of a blow tonight (Thursday) into tomorrow morning, it appears the wind will be diminishing by midday tomorrow and staying light through the weekend. Even tonight with 20+ knot winds forecast, a mooring in the main harbor probably won't be too uncomfortable since the basin is pretty well protected from the north and west by the town itself. If the wind were going to have a southerly or easterly component it would be a different story.

Take one of the town moorings, they are a short dink ride from town dock. There is an anchorage outside of Spa Ck, in the Severn R. but that is way too exposed this time of year. Hot Maryland Crab soup at the town market!

Taking a break from the Bahamas for a ski vacation ... now you're really rubbing it in!

Sorry I missed you as you passed thru J.C. How was the anchorage? I suppose you might have hit some nasty weather through there. We went thru our fall clean-up blitz and boat winterization over the weekend.

Things should have thinned out by now and you should be able to find anchoring room up spa creek.
The harbormaster will offer advice on where there are open spots. You are required to check in with them if you anchor in spa or back creek.

We picked up a town mooring for a couple days. Tomorrow we go searching for a grocery and a chandlery.

I saw your other post from Solomons. I was wondering if you bugged out earlier than planned. Saturday from land it did not look like ANY boats were moored. Today(Sunday), lookng from the Spa bridge, there were so many race boats going through the moorings thatI couldn't tell if you were out there or not.

(EDIT) Oops- i think oi got your schedule confused with Jim Seaman's.
