recently installed andersen 28 two speed self tailing winches on my 1983 hunter 31. so far ive regretted it. problem is every time i go to tack and before i can get tension on the sheet, the line slackens and falls off the the winch drum in a concentric pile at its base. this often results in an overwrap and just a mess in general. has anyone else had this problem and remedied it? thanks.

Try two wraps on the winch and pull the sheet in an upward motion - works well on my Lewmar 48 primaries, particularly on the starboard side.

What's holding it on the winch drum? Assuming you are correctly putting it over the wiper and into the jaws.

At least 3 wraps.

What size are your sheets? Anderson winches have a relatively narrow range of line sizes that that work with. For your winch its 3/8 to 7/16. make sure you are in this range or the line may fall out.

Angle from which the line comes

What is the angle from which the line comes to the winch? It does not have to be perfectly horizontal but it cannot come up to the winch from too low. It will not wrap correctly. It should not fall off. Is the line slick? It sounds like a slick line, wrong angle, not enough wraps and perhaps the line is too small for the winch or some combination of those things.
