Piling on?
It took me a couple reads, and it wasn't stated specifically, so I'm guessing the sea lions sank the boat by piling on until it started taking on water. Is that what happened? Can't imagine how else they might accomplish it.

We stop in Newport quite often and these
Ain't no cuddley little Harbor Seals, these are the big huge things that must weigh a thousand pounds. They haul out on swim steps and a bunch will pile on anywhere they can. First time we moored there my wife thought there was one on our swimstep all night every time we moved. I've never had them approach my boat and they seem to zero in on the ones that are left alone alot. Some boats there are only an excuse to keep the mooring so have become permanent homes to them.

Easy solution!
Get some cardboard to make templates of the areas of your boat accessable to these sea lions. Get some marine plywood and cut it to the patterns of the templates. Hammer some nails from the bottom up, so that they stick up when placed on the deck or other accessable areas. The sea lions will not climb up and rest and sleep on a bed of nails.

but, I have a hard time sympathizing with anyone who can afford to moor a boat in Newport Beach. If any of you want to move, I would love to place my boat there for what I pay here..... Our sea lions perch on the bouys and bait barge. Their barking is natural. Get a cattle prod if they get too close.

... glad you think it's so expensive. Newport Beach moorings are some of the least expensive boat wet storage means in California. Of course, they will raise the lease prices soon. However, it is also one of the least boating-friendly areas around. Few places to tie up on a temp basis to get water, guests, etc. Just a few public docks in the whole place and very restrictive in their use. Sorry you feel it's a rich persons' place. It really isn't and they basically tolerate the boats like so many other places. Rick D.

Rick, am I totally off base? Sorry, friend. My experience has been limited to trying to find marina slips. The few I've found were nearly twice what I pay in Mission Bay. I can't justify $550/month for my 27 footer and the marinas have fewer amenities than mine. I've never considered a mooring. Where does one get mooring info. I thought you had to buy them. I agree with you that Newport Bay is not very boater friendly unless you're a local. There's only one launch ramp, at Newport Dunes, behind the very low PCH bridge - no good for sailors. If you join the American Legion Yacht club you might get a slip at their dock after a couple years wait. (I have seriously considered that.) If I move at all it will be to Dana Point.
