Do you leave your sea cocks open or close them when you leave the boat. Hay Phil, might make a good quiz also. I'd really like to know what the majority of you guys and gals do.

Iv'e read that you are suposed...

To close them always. Itis suposed to keeps all the little sea creatures from growing inside the hoses. I guess if a hose ruptured and the sea cock was open you could find your boat at the bottom of your slip. FYI I only close the sea cock for the head. I'm always afraid I'll forget the intake for the engine, so I leave it open. My boats in salt water Dan s/v Illusions

I leave the engine one open..

..and all other close . I just happened to forget twice to open that one..altough there are 'tricks' to prevent this..).But if I will not tend the boat for 2-3 weeks or more , I will close this one too. For one thing all other sea-cocks are easy to get to and checked , and it actually does good to them to close and open them periodically.

I close all

There is an easy way to remember to open the engine through hull. I hang the engine key from the handle of the through hull. That way if I can find the key, I can turn the through hull. Hayden Watson 1988 C30 tr/bs Papillon Spokane, WA

Always, always, always close 'em all

I always close all 4 seacocks on my 87H285 when I leave the boat, but am moving up to a 83H54, which has many, many more seacocks... we'll see. Eric Lorgus s/v Explorer

No, just the head thru hull !

Yeah, I know I'm supposed to but I don't unless I think I'm gonna be away for a while. I figure the one most likely to let water in the boat is the head, the thinking is that the only thing keeping the water from coming in is a cheap valve/gasket in a cheap head....I rarely ever close the thru hulls for the sink. Figuring this is a straight forward hose that would have to break in order to let water in the boat. And as for the engine intake...sadly no I don't, it's a pain in the butt to get to and it (hopefully) is a closed system.

Nope...I don't

I leave them closed when not in use

I may be a bit over the top in some of your collective opinions, but I leave the cocks closed at all times. I open them as necessary and close them immediately following use. I _do_ have an outboard, so dealing with the engine is obviated, but the head cock is left in the closed position, opened to flush, then closed again. Anal? Undoubtedly. Safe? Undoubtedly? Sea Cocks

Admittedly, I know that it is best to close all seacocks; however, I keep the one for the air conditioner open. I set the unit to cylcle on and off periodically to keep the humidity an temperature in the cabin in control. It helps to keep the cabin ventilated and mildew in control

Closed when away

I usually leave them open (except macerator discharge valve) if I am staying on the boat, and close all when I leave for any period of time. I have a notice which I put up at the bottom of the companionway when they are closed which will remind me when I return to the boat. One other person mentioned that it is good for the valves to be exercised. I think this is a very important point. If you have ever dealt with a valve which is frozen open in an emergency, you will agree. If you have to force it to make it work, the likelihood of something breaking goes way up. Sea Cocks - Open

I leave my sea cocks open except for the sea cock for the head. We have had so much problems with water backflowing into the holding tank (while underway) that I always close them when we are finished using the head. Al the rest are left open.

Close them all when we leave.

Betting the boat and all the fine wine on board:) on a 75 clamp is not a good bet.

Haven't found a way to close the engine

I have a Volvo-Penta MD7A (13 hp). It has a small intake coming up the port side adjacent to the engine, then a rubber hose that goes around to the starboard side to the pump. I can't find any way to close it. The seawater intake for the head is kept closed. The outlet is frozen open (since I don't have a holding tank yet, I can't use the toilet anyway but want to close the cock to prevent hose rupture). I'll change it when we haul-out next month.

Closed

I only open the thru hulls when in use, then immediately close them. Mine are old, I don't trust them and will be replacing them on the next haul out. Don't have an engine thru hull (outboard). Rob keeps his head thru hull closed except when in immediate use. All others he leaves open unless he's leaving the boat for a couple days. LaDonna

We Close 'Em

All of my sailing mentors have always told me to close them and then check them again just to be sure you closed them.

You gotta be brave or crazy to leave them open...

...a simple hose failure or head valve failure can cause a lot of unnecessary pain and expense
