Anchors

I am starting a new thread for this. Craig, I am intrigued by your kedge anchor "on the pushpit". Do you mean it is mounted on the pushpit? Could we see a photo? Is this what most people do? My kedge and a spare anchor are stowed in the lazarette. The one time I had to deploy it this did not seem a disadvantage, but I am about to cross the Thames estuary and having grounded there once I should be glad to be able to put the kedge out without delay.

Thanks for your tip about the use of the empty bilge to store chain for the spare anchor. You made me aware that I have a spare kedge and a spare bow anchor with no spare rode for either. Your chain compartment in the bilge is on my winter work list.

It's nothing fancy. The anchor is a danforth and a deck fitting for the crown was adapted to mount on one of the verticals. The stock is just lashed in place. I've seen CQRs hooked over the top and lashed in place. The previous owner installed it and I just left it in place. He called it his brake, and it would work well if I wanted to pull the boat backwards, but not so convenient if I wanted to set the kedge in another direction. Something more adaptable would be the anchor and rode both in a duffel bag and stored in a cockpit locker. It would be easy then to place in the skiff and set in any direction, or handed to a good Samaritan and they could set it, or be the good Samaritan. It would also get the weight off the ends of the boat. I've never used it, not a credit on my part but because the edges here are pretty well defined. Either there is water or there is not.

After years of cruising the Florida Keys, Bahamas, and anchoring everywhere, I have found myself for the past 13 years in Northern Europe. In all of this time, I have never anchored anywhere. Have sailed the North Sea from Holland, around northern tip of Denmark, to Sweden, then the Baltic to Poland, Russia , Lithuania, Latvia, and again never ever anchored. I have a Danforth, CQR (difficult to stow), and a Fisherman, my favorite in the states was the Danforth, also it is easy to stow. I would like to get rid of all the excess anchors (yes, I know, I "might" regret it). My Primary sailing is now restricted and will remain the Baltic. Suggestions???
