Hunter 35.5 San Francisco
I have a Hunter 35.5 that I sail in the San Francisco bay waters. The SF bay bottom is primarily mud, sand and silt. Thanks to a few million yards of waste from the gold mining days, the bottom has a few remnants of deteriorating equipment as well. I am seeking advice on the best anchor for this type of bottom. The vessel was obtained with a Danforth, which has been used in shallow waters, but I'm looking for redundancy, which will ensure the boat's security during extended periods unattended.

Fortress 37

I just got a Fortress 37, which is a Danforth style, for my Hunter466 based on numerous recommendations by bay sailors. That compliments the CQR that came stock with the boat. allan

Fortress best in soft mud

you can change the angle of the tines depending on whether you have sand or mud. The Bruce design is good (get a claw they are MUCH cheaper for the same design), but a Bruce won't hold in soft mud. Delta quickset is good in mud, and a good alternative given that you have a Danforth anchor already. They are a bit on the expensive side. I have a claw, a Fortress and a CQR

Don't forget the chain

You want about 40 feet of 5/16 chain with any of these anchors (that will make a Bruce 40 awful heavy if you need to pull it in by hand).

Chain: Less Of...

I don't think you need 40', Kailani. See this link to the Fortress site. See the spec's and see also 'safe anchoring'. These anchors do need some scope (5:1) but they really don't need much chain (probably 8-12' for where you will be anchoring in the greater SFO area.) Save your back if you don't have a windlass. If you do, then a lot of chain can be more convenient. RD
