I would like to hear others opinion regarding anchoring. Our sailing group gets together each summer and cruises around Florida or the Bahamas. Each year we have a certain number of boats that drag when they are at anchor. So far we have avoided serious damage, but we have had some busted up fiberglass and harmless groundings. So this leads me to ruminate on which anchor is best for boats that weigh 3,000 pounds or so in the 25’ to 26’ range – especially in and around Florida. We use a Danforth anchor with 8’ of chain rode and 200 feet of line. We have never dragged. I do not know why. Most of the bottom composition is a mixture of sea grass, sand and that sticky, hard mud mixture that is around Key West and Bimini. In sand our Danforth is excellent. But we see boats time and time again drag.I got the bright idea to purchase a 26-lb. CQR-knockoff anchor last year. I have heard how excellent they are in grassy and rocky bottoms. I did not install the anchor roller, so we did not take it. No reason since the old reliable Danforth held just fine. Other boats were on the beach with their anchors dragging. So now I’m getting paranoid – When is it our turn to drag? I’m thinking that maybe there are some other things I can do, like take a look at other anchors. So question #1 – Danforth, Bruce, CQR, Delta, Bulwagga – Which ones hold better. Is one easier to set than others? Which ones do not reset well (a must for tidal areas)? Question #2 – If I add 15’ of 5/8 stainless steel chain to the existing 8’ pvc-coated chain rode, will this SIGNIFICANTLY add to the holding power, especially in a squall? It seems that it would.Question #3 – We use a 7 to 1 ratio for scope length. If I use a 10 to 1 ratio, would this improve the holding power?Question #4 – Are the knockoff anchors as good as the original?Question #5 – Is setting two anchors better than one. I’m not so sure, but I would like to hear from others.I would much like to hear from others on this.
