Have to take a sailboat to the Chesapeake from Atlantic City NJ. Mast is to high for the bridges on the canal, so I need to go around the outside and catch the rising tide. Timing doesn't work well this year - is there an anchorage on the west side of the canal (somewhere around the ferry terminal) - that would be the ideal timing to be there is the early am to catch the tide

There is a great anchorage over at Lewes behind the breakwater just inside. Skip Cape Mays.

Lewes would work, also depending on timing there's the Maurice and Cohansey (sp?) Rivers on the Jersey side with both marinas and anchorages. When I brought my boat up we averaged 10 knts thanks to the current and got to Delaware City hours ahead of schedule. FYI, the local barge traffic does not always keep to the channel but they are very infrequent.
