I just picked up a c38 which came with a 40# supermax anchor and a 40# bruce with 100' of chain and a shackle with stripped threads...we won't go there. Now that I'm down to to a supermax with no chain I was curious as to the reccomended amount of chain to use with this anchor. I've heard it doesn't need much if any -That sounds a little funny to me. If any of you WITH THIS ANCHOR have any input I'd be very grateful. Thanks, By the way, most of my bottoms are hard sand, soupy mud, or something in between! I'll also be using a 15# danforth with 20' of chain which has proven to be major overkill for my old 25' Hunter.

Re: Anchor Chain

I was taught that the chain was used with the anchor for 2 reasons, the first to add some weight to keep the anchor firmly on the bottom, the second was to prevent chafing of the rope on anything rough on the bottom. I think most people have about 10' of chain, most experts recommend 20'.

Anchor Chain

Patrick, I don't know about the Supermax, but I've had a Bruce for the past 10 years. With 15 feet of chain for my C36, the holding was so-so. When I went to 40 feet of chain, the holding vastly improved. I've always read that you should have at least 1 foot of chain for every foot of boat length. It's worked very well for me in all sorts of conditions. And then you see the 35 foot powerboat with no chain, just rode, because the chain will mess up the deck and doesn't work well with the electric remote rope windlass. They wonder why they drag when the wind picks up! But I digress.....

I hav e 70' of chain

I have a 16# Fortress and I got 70' of chain and 200' of rode. I got that much chain figuring that most of the time, I pay out all the chain and a little rode as a snubber. Makes it pretty easy when anchoring. Les Murray s/v Ceilidh '86 C-36 #560

Anchors, and Chain

Patrick: I've never heard of a supermax. If you have a windlass that will handle chain, I would go with the Bruce, and 100' of chain plus 200-300' of 1/2"-5/8" 3 strand nylon anchor rode. This should safely anchor in just about any conditions. By the way, the Bruce should be at least the 32lb model for your boat.
