Canard 303

I own a Pearson 303 on which I have just installed a bow roller for a claw anchor. Does anyone have experience installing a windlass. The P303 has very little room in the bow for an anchor locker, there is a shallow anchor lazarette forward, but not suitable for a windlass that drops chain and rode below.

Are you using a 33lb. Claw?

Are you using a 22lb. or 33lb. on Canard? If your using a 33lb. Sometimes it's just easier to motor up on the anchor line, then cleat it, and let the motion of the boat rip it out of the bottom. From there it's only 12-20 feet of actual lifting. Installing an anchor windlass can get complicated and expensive and on a 303 it may require some glass work. The windlass is only part of expense in the installation as you'll need approx 40+ feet of 1/0 tinned marine grade wire, the terminals, fuses relay and on and on.. We actually have a windlass on our boat and I rarely if ever use it. I simply motor up on the anchor pull in the slack line then cleat it off when it's vertical. In reality I'm usually only pulling up less than 25 feet and I can do that faster than using my windlass..

What's the weight of your anchor and chain?

The installation of a claw anchor and a bowroller is a real improvement you will enjoy over stowing anchor and rode in a locker. On the other hand the benefits of the addition of a windlass are highly quetionable unless you have a physical dissability. It can be done, it is all a matter of priorities; a windlass over a functional V-Berth? Ater that decide wether manual or electric. ($$) Good luck.

I generally anchor in less than 20 feet with 3/8 chain

and a 35 pound plow. the last time I tried I was able to ship that anchor without mechanical help. I am 5 feet 5 inches tall and weigh 160 pounds and am nearing 70 years. i don't expect to need a power windlass for as long as I have the boat. edited for spelling

I like my windlass because I have 100' of chain, How

ever, I can pull it in by hand just as easily, and I am 65+. I don't have the perfect setup either, as I have to "steer" the rope, and chain into place or it will pile up and jump out of the gypsie. I have a 15kg Bruce with 100' of 1/4HT chain.
