Anchor Windlass

I have an '89 Beneteau OC350 with a manual Goiot windlass, I'd like to replace it with an electric windlass. What make and model are you using and would you buy it again? Since my manual windlass is a horizontal model, I'm thinking I'd probably stay with that style as it will help make the conversion as easy as possible. It seems with most windlass' manufacturers that 35' boats are the cutoff and the next step up is 45' boats. The OC350 is a 34' boat. From time to time I anchor alone and want to make sure I can retireve the anchor, especially in nasty conditions. With this being said, which size windlass would you recommend?

Just on the basis of support from the factory and regional offices, I would certainly buy a Maxwell again. On top of that, it is a good looking, strong, functional product. Mine is a vertical capstan with a chain gypsie, gearbox adn motor below decks, on way (up!) only. Th eonly thing I would add is a clutch for rapid down.

I now try not to use my windlass

This past weekend I ran the rode under the cleat in the anchor locker and then back to a winch in the cockpit. In the morning when I went to pull it up, I started the motor, put it in gear at idle and pulled in the rode from the cockpit as it went forward. When I got to the chain part, I put the engine in reverse and turned so I was able to motor around the anchor so that I was on the windward side of it. I then put the engine in neutral and went to the bow and pulled in the chain by hand as I drifted towards it. So from now on, I plan on using my windlass as a backup, even as a single-handler. I'm also being forced to get used to sailing single-handled without an autopilot as my new autopilot is on backorder :( I feel like I'm becoming less dependent on these advances and I like that.
