Looking to upgrade from the factory supplied anchor on my 340. Seeking input from those 340 owners who have upgraded regarding anchor chosen, how the new anchor fits the anchor roller, performance.

Like my Delta

For my conditions, the Delta has been great on my 340. Friend with a 336 has a Bruce and loves it, too.

Anchor Upgrade

I recently upgraded the anchor on my 335. After reviewing the tests in Practical Sailor I bought a 35 pound CQR which in the combination of setting and holding tests performed by Practical Sailor seemed to perform the best overall. While not subjected to a real blow yet, it has been performing well including handling 180 degree wind shifts with no problem. Two drawbacks are the cost and the weight (I don't have a windlass) as I added a 40 foot 3/8" chain at the same time. Good luck!

Delta

I have a 35 pound Delta attached to the factory-supplied chain and line rode. It has never failed me. The drawback is the weight; it takes some effort to retrieve. The anchor doesn't match the pin holes in the bow roller, so it must be tied in place, but this is a small inconvenience.

Anchor

The type of anchor depends on a lot of factors. Not all anchors are suitable for all conditions. Do you mostly anchor in sand, rocks, mud, or is there grass. The CQR is good in most all conditions. A Dadforth good in mud and sand, but not grass. You can get a lot of usefull comparrison information in the 2000 catalogs published by West Marine, or BoatUS. They provide basic information regarding hold strength, what anchors are good for different bottom conditions, etc. Also, check PS for recient studies on anchors. They published one in the last few months. Chain is important in helping set the anchor. Some use all chain rode. You should have at least one boat length in chain. Don't go with the "standard" six feet supplied with most kits. Also, its is good practice to have at least two anchors, for varing bottom conditions or bad weather.
