I'm looking for the right size Bruce or Horizon Claw anchor for my C36. West Marine catalog suggests a 33lb. Bruce for 32-39 ft. boat and suggest a 22lb. Horizon Claw for 31-35 ft. boat. As the C36 is on the lighter side, can I save my back and go with a 22lb. or should I make an appointment with my opthopedic doctor and buy the 33 lb.?? Most of my anchoring is in protected to semi-protected, soft (mud/clay) bottom in Galveston Bay and the Texas coast. Russ Williams 1984 C36 FOUR SAIL

Anchors

Russ, When it comes to anchors, I like to go up one recommended size rather that down. On my new C36 I installed a 35# Delta with 50' of 5/16" chain and 150' of 5/8" nylon rode for my primary, and a 15# Fortress with 30' of 5/16 chain and 150' of 5/8" nylon for my secondary/day hook. For you normal cruising area, a fluke type (Danforth or Fortress) would work well. For dificult or stormy conditions, go for the extra insurance that a 33-35# Bruce or plow anchor will give you. (Also get some chriopractor insurance if you think you will need it). Good luck. Don Hall Windsong, C36 1783

anchor 4 a 36

Russ, I had a 36 Catalina with a Danforth that held OK. I moved up to a 380 Catalina that came with a Bruce 33....WOW, IT HOLDS!!!!!!The trade off of a good nights sleep is worth it. I did have to horse up my anchor on my 36 by hand. The 33 would be tough (not impossible) You may want to opt for a manual windlass. One other 36 owner in our fleet used a manual windlass with excellent results on his....Good luck

mast mounted windless

If you don't have a windless you can use your mast mounted winch to retrieve the hook.

Go bigger

We're using a 33# Bruce with 50' of 5/16" chain and 200' of 5/8" nylon rode and a 22# Danforth with 50' of 5/16 chain and 200' of 5/8" nylon as a second. The Bruce and chain is heavy , but is worth the peace of mind. We also have a MkII with the windlass, making the weight not as much of an issue.

When in doubt...

I agree with the larger is better sentiment. Also use a 35# Delta with 50' 5/8 chain and 200' 5/8 rope. Have a 22# Delta as a back up. Soft mud is a challenge so the large plow would produce better penetration. Therefore, you may want to investigate options for retrieving same. C36 MkII #1728 "QE3"

45# Delta

I use a 45# Delta with 36ft 5/16" chain and 200ft 5/8 nylon and have been very satisfied. The delta is carried on a windline URM-3 if I remember correctly. I have not had much difficulty getting it up as of yet.

Bruce 33

Have used a Bruce 33# for my c36 as well as for my ODAY 35 which I previously owned. The Bruce has never failed through many/many nites on the hook. Back up is a Danforth which I've never felt the need to use. Investing in a good Anchor windlass is worth it, we have a Maxwell 800 and it is a very much appreciated addition.
