Greetings all, I will be relocating our Hunter 280 to the Caribbean this fall. My question is simple. I want to "beef-up" my ground tackle to something like a 20-30 lb. plow with maybe 20-30 ft. of 1/2" chain & maybe 250 ft. or so of 1/2" line... Any suggestions? I also plan on bringing plenty of extra line to tie into the mangroves for any Big-Blows... All help appreciated

Check with anyone who sells anchors

There are always charts that say what weight an anchor should be. Don't just check the web site, call the special order desk. Web sites usually advertise only 1 brand. I've usually seen it recommended that you have a boat lengths worth of chain. 1/2 in sounds heavy for a 28 footer....maybe 3/8s. 1/2 in line should be fine...again check with the special order desk or actually go and talk to someone. For surviving a hurricane....you might want something a little bigger than 1/2 inch line.

1/2 inch chain?????

Not to be a wise guy, but are you anchoring a battleship??? I think 1/2 chain is way over what you need. The added overkill in anchoring will not be worth the weight. A good 5/16 chain is more than sufficent for a 280. I anchor a H37C with 5/16 and a 35lb. CQR... Just a thought! Ron/KA5HZV

The bigger the better

Russ, you sound like you have doubts about the logic of your idea. This is one area in which you don't need a lot of analysis paralysis!!! The title of my submission here says it all. Next issue! JC

I agree

You know your anchor is too big when you can't haul it up. If you have a nice windlass, get the biggest setup you can afford. You'll sleep better. Someone once told me "You can't go 'too big' with anchors or bilge pumps." I agree. LaDonna
