I just bought a Beneteau 323 and she comes with a 10Kg (22 lbs)Bruce anchor. It doesn't seem much for a boat this size and I'm wondering whether I should upgrage to a 15Kg (33lbs)or not? I will be sailing on Lake Champlain. Thank you J-P

why the B 323?

...I am sailing a B 281 now and thinking of trading it in on a B 323 next Fall...I would appreciate hearing the pros and cons of the B 323 and reasons for your decision...Tks, Bill.

anchor size

JP If it were my boat I would jump up to the 33# anchor, unless you have an all chain rode. I think with the larger anchor you will let you sleep a little easier at night :) Charlie

Bruce Anchor

I too have just bought a new 323, only without an anchor. The site below gives info about the recommended size of a Bruce anchor and rode. I have both a 39# Bruce, for rough waters, and a 22# Danforth for other days. Using their chart looks like a 33# would work for storm and the 22 you have would be good for working. Happy Sailing Terry

Go with a larger Anchor

We replaced the 22# Danforth with a 33# claw and a 100' of chain on our 321. The 321 is a bit heavier than your 323, but I would still upgrade. Good Luck!

Insurance

Anchors are like insurance. When you don't think you have enough, you don't. Buy the next size up and use chain rode rather than line for the first 100'. You will be glad that you did. Jim

Thanks for your comments

Is it fairly easy to handle a 33 lbs Bruce without a windlass? Thanks again J-P

In a Word, NO!

Especially if you have a long chain rode. Your age and the bottom depth will also come into play. We compromised and installed a manual windlass (Lewmar Anchorman). Works great for the shallow muddy waters of the Texas coast.

Lake Champlain

J-P, I have spent the last 10 years with a Hunter 335 on Lake Champlain and found that the 33# Bruce never failed. I used 30 feet of chain and 200 feet rode. Have to say that the Bruce is a super anchor for the conditions encountered on the lake. No windlass required to raise it either.
