Does anybody know the correct chain and rope size to be used with the electric windlass supplied as standard on the Hunter 356? Unfortunately the windlass is only labelled SL so I cannot be sure what exact model it is to look up an owners manual for chain and rope specs.

Simpson Lawrence - 5/16 Grade 40 Chain (most likely)

It's a Simpson Lawrence windlass but the gypsy or head could be either for 5/16 (G4) or smaller. I have 5/16 (G4- Grade 40) chain and heavier 5/8 line. It's important that the chain fits the gypsy/head. Most windlass will only work with G4 High Test chain.

Our 356 windlass is the special simpson lawrence made for the 356-it's a low profile unit to fit the locker and cover. It is designed-standard-for 5/16 BBB chain but ca\n also use the G4 chain. 9/16" line is the recommended line size.

We had the same issue right after we bought our boat last Feb.
We went to the big WM store in Ft Lauderdale, Pam Wall helped us outfit the boat with a nice discount. She knew the chain, rode sizes to use and had it all spliced together to run through the windlass without a problem. Ours is 100ft of 5/16" BBB chain with 75 ft of 9/16" 3-twist rode and a 35lb Manson Supreme anchor. We are generally anchored in about 10 ft of water. It all seems to work together well.

Contact the mfg. to be sure what you need. Some of these windlasses have interchangable gypse's. You don't want to be purchasing chain twice.

Take the gypsy right off. They undo real easy.
Read the number on the side wall and check it out on the SL web site or call one of their dealers.
The number identifies the gypsy and hence the range of chain sizes it can handle.
