Anyone come up with a method of mounting some sort of anchor roller on stern of boat (2004 H33 in my case)? I generally set stern anchor from a dinghy - but would like to be able to set from the boat - i.e., drop front anchor, back down, set stern anchor...etc. Michael

Michael, I have a H36.....

and we probably sail the same areas ( Santa Rosa, San Miguel, Santa Cruz). On my H36 I use the jib winch located on either side of the stern to tighten and retrieve the anchor. Usually I drop the anchor to one side where the S/S arch is located. I only have 25ft of chain and use a Danforth so its not too bad to pick up by hand the last 25ft. I don't know where the winches are for the 33. The H356 had the jib winches forward...so if your set up is like that, it may present a problem. I fail to understand how an anchor roller is going to help you much. By the way, most of the time when I set stern/bow from the boat I drop the stern first and go forward and set the bow..it gives me better control. The only time I do it the other way is when the wind is exactly coming a 0 degrees and the boat can drift back where I want it to be. abe

Re: H36

Abe - I am concerned about the chain rubbing on the stern or side of the boat as it is let out or brought in - if not using a dinghy. Sounds like our winches are similarly located - a set aft and a set on the cabin top. I have not set the stern anchor from the boat yet - always used a dinghy - but would like to do it from the boat. I am inclined to set forward anchor first because I have lots of scope up front, as compared to my stern anchor. Thanks for input Michael

The chain may rub a little....

..but if you are careful the damage is minimal. If it rubs it will be against the metal rail and not the fiber glass. Now if you ask me, sometimes I have thought about an electric windlass at the stern....in either case windlass or anchor roller, cosmetically I don't think it looks good. I also had the same problem you did....so I bought more stern rode. Just be prepare to be flexible...sometimes I do stern first, some times bow, depending upon the situation. If I have cross winds, I have more control setting the stern and controling where I am going to set the bow. By the way, the reason that I have to drop the anchor over one side instead of directly astern is that I have Weaver davit system in which my dinghy sits sideways in the back. Good luck, maybe I will see you in the islands one day. abe
