WM, a reliable rigger

Our anchor rode and running rigging are important and low cost enough that we use known and reliable sources. West Marine was the source for our main halyard replacement, and rode for a new anchor. For several years, we had an excellent rigger, and we bought new halyards for our asymetric and genny as well as some other odds and ends from him. He has moved on, or he would be our primary source. That's because splicing around thimbles, and to other hardware is always critical. This is just not something I would buy off e-bay. David Lady Lillie

1/2 inch rode seems like overkill

on such a small boat. I would take a look at the West Marine site and look up anchoring information. I doubt that there is too much variation in strength between most common nylon line used for anchoring but there are a lot of different kinds and brands. You did not say why you are replacing the old line.

i'm replacing w/ 1/2" because....

....the old 1/2", (probably 19 y/o oem rode), thimbal is long gone, rode has 2 nasty knots in it that aren't about to come out, it is worm and frayed in one place, its about 50' long, and given that there is little price difference between 3/8" and 1/2" the larger is easier to handle when wet. i agree with you David, quality is most important. thats why i am asking about the best name brands. right now there is lehigh, wellington, and samson on ebay. i know of lehigh and samson but not the other. i always compare prices + shipping with west marine and/or other chandleries too. ebay is not always the best price going. (i did however just ebay aprox 450' of 16ga anchor brand wire for 42.00 shipped vs, 76.00 + s$h at WM.) thanks guys, william

I'd look at Sailnet.com for New England Ropes -it's good quality stuff and is really not very expensive. Even cheaper if you splice it yourself. I agree with the others here - remember, good quality rode will often be the only thing between your boat and.... And 1/2" line will be dramatically less elastic than 3/8" line given your boat size. Therefor, the 1/2" will more likely yank the anchor out of the seabed, putting your boat into.... Good luck with your decision.

New England Ropes

thanks Drew. went to their site and yeah, 7500 tensile vs 4400 tensile for 3/8" does seem like a bit of overkill. (not that i'm not a firm believer in overkill in most instances.) you're correct, the elasticity might be a better trade off for pure strength. (plus, i've literally risked my life to their ropes before!..climbing and rapelling).
