Has anyone installed an anchor holder on the front of their 30 tall rig? We've anchored a lot this year and I'm tired of pulling out and putting the anchor back in the locker...

I had a small line about 30" long. It attached to the front of the anchor. Once it is back on the sprit, I just tied it off the the bow rail. Simple and never had an issue with it.

There are several things that can be done. I have a 33 lb bruce type anchor with 30 feet of chain and I have a piece that I installed on the sprit that holds the chain.

I use to have a small piece of cord coming from the end of the anchor that I tied off to the bow rail. That worked fine as well.

I have two anchors, both stowed on the bowsprit rollers - the 18# danforth lies on its side (flukes out) so that the retaining pin holds it; the 10#plow is pinned upside down on the other roller. Both chains run back to the windlass (with bungees to the cleat). I also have a rail mount for use when I need to make frequent stops - the shank is then tied snug to the rail to keep it from bouncing... If I carried a larger anchor, would probably put it on a rail mount.

Can one of you guys post a pic of your setup? I'm having a hard time picturing the setup..

I'll see about taking an illustrative pic later this week when I'm at the boat. Really is pretty simple. Lay the danforth shaft on the roller with the fluke to the outside - the retaining pin should fit over the shaft. Run the chain back to the windlass and wrap a couple times. My small plow (lunch hook) rests on the other roller upside down, with the retaining pin run though the hole in the shaft. I simply drop the chain for the plow in the bottom of the locker. For added security, I stretch a bungee from a chain link back to the cleat in the locker. Neither anchor has ever moved forward when under way, including in 6-7 rough swells off shore.
Clearly, if your anchor(s) is over sized, my arrangement won't work..........

Bill,

Not sure what style anchor you have. I use a Mason Supreme which is easily tied to the bow rail. Not sure if you can see it from this. The problem for me is I'm on a mooring. After seeing a post by MainSail about the dangers anchors pose on a mooring I now remove it and stow it when I leave the boat. It is a pita.

It is hard to see in this picture but if you look hard enough there is a little metal part that you see on the bow sprit. That is where the chain stop is.

We have a New Zealand Rocna and have the "leash" attached to a small Johnson cleat that I put on the pulpit. Used to do a knot, but the cleat's much simpler and cleaner.

Billy,

I mounted one of these tensioning devices and it's worked out pretty well on my 22lb claw type anchor.

Here is what I did with my Standard Rig - a little adjustment with the rollers port and starboard and I think it would work for you also.

Here is how I have my 1991 tall rig set up. With the danforth on its side locked in place I'm able to keep both the bruce and danforth in place on the bow sprit.

I keep my Catalina 30 TR on a mooring and rarely use a slip while cruising. I have cable tied a length of 4" PVC pipe to each of the two most forward leaning members of the bow rail. My 22lb CQR with swivel and chain goes into the starboard pipe. My Fortress 16 with swivel and chain goes into the port pipe. The rest of the chain and rodes go easily into the anchor locker. This configuration keeps the anchors off the rollers and out of the way of anchor rodes, bridles, mooring pendants and such even in punchy seas. Either is also immediately deployable by lifting the anchor locker lid to access the extra rode and chain. It takes a bit of finess cutting of PVC and angling of the anchors to make it nice, but once done, it is quite convenient.
Good luck with however you work it out.

FOB,
Thanks for the photos, it is now clear to me and thanks to BillyK for asking the question. Can either of you explain to me the differences btwn the Catalina 30 models? For example, I have an '87 30 MKII tall rig. I understand the MKII is an upgraded boat but what makes it different from a standard 30? Is there a difference. I'm in a small marina with the only Catalina and have no other Catalina 30's to compare to. Curious. Thanks for your time. Derek

the main difference is the upgraded t-shaped cockpit. later on the cockpit was changed to walk-thru open stern, and then the mkIII. some think the mkIII heralded slight degrading of the interior. if you go to the catalina 30 international site there is a chart of changes thru the years; there have been many and all good as far as i can tell.
