Anchor-Locker Storage Problem

I have a 1988 Catalina 30. The anchor locker is only large enough for the 13lb. "standard issue" danforth anchor. This anchor has "slipped" in the night more than once for a very unsetteling nights rest. I purchased a 25lb. danforth anchor with 12ft. of chain and have found this anchor to hold extremely well in all conditions; no "slipping in the night". My problem is that it does not fit in the anchor locker. The shaft/shank? is too long as well as the flukes. There are 2 small short rollers on the bow but not long enough to store the anchor.I am sure other C30 owners have experienced the same problem. Any suggestions?

Anchors

Hi EMMA-MIA; On my 96 C30, I have a 22lb danforth style hanging on my bow pulpit port side using a Windline rail mount anchor bracket. The shaft is held tight to the rub rail with a bungee. Always ready to deploy, and has never come loose even in really rough conditions. Primary anchor is a 33 lb. Bruce that sits on the anchor roller in the stem fitting. It is secured with a small hole drilled thru the anchor where the locking pin of the roller fits thru. I use this anchor 90% of the timie. Fair winds Dave

anchor chain

I have a Cat 30 and use a 30lb Bruce with 100 ft of chain and 200 ft of rode. Your 12 ft might be a problem in adverse wind/bottom conditions. Dan

anchor chain

I agree with Dan, I did not notice the chain lenght you mentioned in your post. My 33 lb. Bruce has 50 ft of chain and 250' 1/2 inch New England 3 strand. We normally try to anchor in 10- 15 ft of water and use at least 7-1 rode. We have slept thru some pretty good blows and never moved an inch. When figuring scope, don't forget to add the 4 ft from the water to the anchor roller on a C30. If you do much cruising, I would add a plow type anchor to your inventory, you will then be ready for almost all bottoms. Fair winds Dave

HI Emma

I have a C30 1988 Tallrig and anchor out every weekend and for weeks at a time. A danforth anchor should not be used for over nighters. In a wind or tide shift 180o the anchor breaks out very easey and will not reset with the forks full of mud grass sticks Ect.On your boat there is a spot in the locker for a plow anchor if you look there is a nook in the frount by your locker up by the lid about 2" by 3" this is the spot for the shaft and the plow end fits down in the port side of the locker in the hole on top of your rope and chain.I had a Fx 16 in the side anchor slot with 200' 1/2" nylon rode and 50'5/16 chain, another fx16 with out the fluks on with the same rode chain set up ,and 35 lb CQR type with 200 5/8 nylon 50' 5/16 chain on a bow roller on STB side, and a delta 35lb with 200 9/16 nylon and 50' chain in the hole in the locker. I like the delta the best ,but the fx 16s are great in sand and mud set 180o apart. I have moved the delta on the bow roller and the CQR into my garage, and one fx16 into the rear laseret locker .I tryed a fx11 but i feel the flooks are not long enought to set well. A bruce anchor will fit in the locker but i dont like them, but alot of people do. John
