I have new anchor with 200 feet of 1/2 inch, 3 strand/braid anchor line that keeps getting knotted. I have a Mac25 and want to store this anchor (this will be my spare) and line in the rear starboard hatch. I have tried several different coiling techniques (wrapping around your arm, making figure 8's, making regular loops, to name a few) all ending with the same results, 15 minutes of untangling the line. What methods to you use? Have you made something to coil it on? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Chris M25 Chara

Anchor rode

I have an old milk case that I throw my line in by looping it around and back and forth, then I put the anchor on top and put it in the lazerette

easy

I know this will sound way too easy, but I found it works on any line about 40 years ago. Just have a fairly deep container with smooth sides and bottom. I have used many rubbermaid plastic kitchen trash cans for example. Just let the line fall in and lay down anyway it wants to. DON'T try to force it into any pattern. When done let chain down on top anyway it wants to lay. Add anchor ,or shank of anchor. When time tuse just pull out anchor and chain, lift over top sides and let down slowly. Let the line come out on it's own. 99% of the time there is no hockle or tangle.

Yup

Same method as Night Sailor works well for me. I use a 5 gal. bucket with some holes drilled in the bottom for drainage.

thanks...

guys. The easy way usually is the last way one thinks of. I have both a milk crate and a bucket in my garage doing nothing but collecting dust. Thanks again. Chris M25 Chara

yeah, thanks

I've been doing the standard line coiling (see link) and still having trouble. I have a new Rubbermaid bucket that is cracked on the bottom. I was going to complain to customer service but this would work well as-is for my line. I'll probably complain anyway on principle.

Off the reel

Yes, I always take any new line, but especially three strand anchor line, and fasten it to something and walk the line out to it's full length wearing gloves and stretching the rope as i go. I lot of untwisting goes on. Then I take the fastened in and drop it into box or bucket for future use. It doesn't hockle as easily that way. And, I know I have visually inspected and felt every inch of line to make sure there are no malformed strands or strands pulled out of line which might weaken the rope.
