Anchor Light

I have been experimenting with a solar powered garden light I picked up at Harbor Freight for $5. It charges a small battery during the day and runs a small LED at night. A fresnel lens helps to make the light omni-directional. A photo-cell turns it off and on. I removed a portion of the plastic housing and I am epoxying an attachment point so the light can be run up the main halyard. I don't want the weight of a permanent light up high, so this might be an inexspensive way to mark my boat at night. There is also available a stainless steel version for a few more bucks. These lights will need to be sealed up against corrsion and moisture, but the price is right. John S Boise

I've used these

I picked up a SS version from harbor freight for 10 bucks. they work pretty well, if you get a good charge. most of the time they last all night. but plenty of times they dim, or go off completly before dawn. (had to move boat at 2am in dec, and it was out.) I also use the davis mega light. hung from the backstay (topping lift). this is nice an bright, uses very little amps. But its not uscg approved! and its about 35 bucks... it has a photo cel, so it turns on at dusk off at dawn. some models have a blink and yellow option....
