All, I need to work on my anchor light, and have been told that I should lower the mast instead of climbing it to get to the anchor light b/c I may tip the boat over if I go up(wt=240lbs). Any thoughts on lowering mast vs climbing it? I have never done either one, plus I have a roller furler. Can the mast be lowered w/o losing the rigging tension settings etc? What's involved with these choices?

if it's under 25 ft, lowering it would be easier. If it's bigger than 25 ft. get someone to help, get a bunson's chair and climb young man, climb ( don't forget the camera!!)

drop the mast. I don't know if you have been up a mast, but if you are working face to face with the mast it is not bad. If you are working at the top of a mast, it is greuling. A 5 minute job can that 30 minutes. Hope others have comments also. r.w.landau ps. we must be on the same diet.

my solution
the mast on my 272 is a real pain to drop, I needed to also work on my light etc, my solution was to wait for perfect still day and pull into a covered slip, work off top of slip, odd angle to say the least but wasnt as bad as dropping or climbing. Safty lines were necessary since roof was metal and slippery. A friend uses a covered slip to drop his mast, slowly enter the slip wrap rope around mast at spreader undo forward and slowly push boat forward , reverse it for raising, it make sense but have never seen him do it.
