I will let you know. I replaced the incandescent bulb with an LED bulb. Much brighter and a lot less mA draw. When going aloft we learned important does and do nots. If you use the spinnicker halyard. Note this halyard does not ride on a sheeve instead it slides on plastic bushing at the masthead. You will quickly cut through this bushing under load of raising someone. We now use the halyard to first raise only a climbers block and tackle with 4 to 1 purchase. Lock the halyard firmly. Now its an easy lift of anyone using the climbers rig. We use the anchor wench to make this very easy. Important: if you install an LED bulb the polarity must be correct or it will not light and get hot. The factory wiring was reversed on my boat at the masthead light socket and I had to change it. RED positive wire must be on center post and black negative on light socket shell.

Great info Capt.!!! Will look into LED and check out the Spin Halyard bushing condition, I have been up on it once before, and the unusual effort was noted, so this may be a problem. I like your idea of block and tackle to ease load and not spin the bushing.
Which LED bulb did you purchase, part#., manufacture?

Well this picture Paul posted some time ago has me confused. It looks like the Head sail Halyard and the Spin Halyard do have Sheaves, but I don't see one for the Main? How can this be? Also appears that the exit point for the sheaves are too far inside allowing the halyards to chafe against the mast head?

more pics from standard mast

That is a picture of a Charleston spar, with a conventional slab reefing main. There are four sheaves in the masthead for internal halyards (not all shown). The two in the front which are shown are for jib halyards 1 & 2, the two in the back are for the main halyard and main topping lift. You can also see a stainless horseshoe shaped "spinnaker crane" on the top of this picture. I hung a turning block here for my spinnaker, and it leads back into the mast a little further down through this entrance fitting. Both the entrance fitting and spinnaker crane were pre-installed when the mast was commissioned. All I had to do was cut a corresponding halyard exit at the bottom of the mast.

The setup with a bushing is likely different on a furling mast, but I recognize them feet in that picture, and it's a standard mast.

"anchor light bulb

Anyone know what type for the C310? "

The PO of my boat (Hull 149) has left a handwritten note in the boat's manual :

Anchor Light - Globe Part No OSRAM 5008, 12V RIOW.

Fortunately, have not had to replace, so I cannot vouch for correctness of info.

The website of Sparcraft-US/Technical Support/Tech Brochures show some deatials of furling masts 2004.

If you write to them they will provide you with a copy of the 'Catalina 310 Furling Mast' virtually overnight.
Unfortunately, I lost mine to Norton antivirus not performing and restored records not usable, and Windows XP conversion to 7 only in 'virtual' format.

Opps, I thought Paul posted them. In the head there 3 holes, the two sheaves shown bolt through the center hole. Are there other sheaves not shown in you picture that bolt through the other holes to provide the proper exit angle preventing chafing? The attachment is from sparcraft-us.com. Not sure which model we have or weather this is a accurate representation of what we have.

different masthead fittings

Looks like the fitting on your furling mast is different from my standard mast based on your schematic. On the std masthead, the center bolt attaches the fitting to the mast only and holds no sheaves. The two outer holes (at the juncture where the black anodizing is visible) are only accessible if you drop the mast and pull the entire fitting out. These each have a bolt which holds two sheaves, and there is no chafe because the bitter end of the halyard goes down inside the center of the mast (no sail in the way).

Based on the schematic, I think your center bolt holds the main and topping lift sheaves, and the forward sheave(s) hold the jib halyard(s).

Yea, it would make sense that it is designed differently, which is why in the thread about water intrusion, the mast base shown by Paul is probably different as well.

Attached info is from my Catalina 310 Charleston Spar Manual. I would be happy to email anyone a complete copy on request. Answers to your specific questions follow. The bulb you need is an incandescent 12 V, 10 Watt bulb P/N 7B235. The 4 Nylon bushing we had to replace are item number 5 in the mast top drawing. My email address is captziggy@comcast.net
