anchor chain

How much chain do you use? I have 100ft of 5/16 chain with 200ft of rode. The problem: It barely fits in the anchor locker. I have to shake things around inside the locker while stuffing the last 50 ft in. It is also HEAVY. It seems to me that so much weight on the bow would adversely affect performance. I have not sailed this boat yet since a slip does not become available till October. Oh Joy! In Alaska too. I would like to reduce the length or at least go to 1/4 inch high tensile G70 which is about 40lbs lighter, or is 100ft 5/16 inch G40 the best option?

Your current setup sounds good to me.I have 35 metres of 6m chain (I guess that's around 120 feet of 1/4"). It's perfect for me, but I sail in inshore Scottish waters.I like chain, and the more the better, I really don't like having 10 metres of chain and lots of rope .. you really need the weight/mass on the sea bed.The downside of all that weight is lifting it though, I hope you have some help.Alisdair

I have the Armstrong anchor retrieval device (sarc). One on the port and one on the starboard side. Great cardiovascular workout! Its freaking heavy.

I bet you anchor shallow :) Keeping a (nearly) rope-only kedge would be a useful spare and labour saving lucnch hook.

AlaskaNo need to go to the expense of grade 70. G40/43 (hi-test) is as strong as 3/8 BBB or 3/8 grade 30 and 100' weighs 75 lbs.
