We have a 2002 Catalina 350. Currently it has a 1\4 chain rode on it. To me it seems small and I believe most boats of that size have at least a 5\16". It has a displacement of 13000 lbs + I think what I have is light. Any thoughts? The chain was supplied by Catalina.

Hhmmm... I still have the book marked in the same place from the laast time this question was asked. Did Catalina give you a small anchor, too? Nigel Calder's book suggests 5/16 Ht/G4 for 3600 pounds load at 60 knots wind. Use the biggest shackle that will fit the link and/or anchor.

ABYC gives the storm load as 1800 pounds for 35-foot monohull. 1/4 BBB has a WLL ~ 2000 pounds, 1/4 G43 WLL 2700 pounds. Sounds correct to me, you're worried for nothing.

Also, if you want to keep the load reasonable, use a snubber. With a snubber, the loads are at least 3 times lower than the table number, even with some exposure to chop. You are very unlikely to ever see a load over 500 pounds, which is nothing for 1/4 chain, <10% BS.

Stu, Thanks for the Insight ,as always, Just a question, when we got our boat she came with double braid and "coated" chain.
We took that off and got triple strand and chain from WM. Question is which is better for anchoring-Double braid or triple strand, given the same amount of chain and anchor> We sail in Lake Erie.

3-strand, as it stretches to absorb the load , like in gusts or waves. Good for dock lines for the same reason.

Never used anything BUT 3 strand. Stretches, and is SO simple to turn in a splice when wear occurs.
And that plastic coated chain is an abomination and should be outlawed as unsafe

Thanks everyone, for your answers, I am trying to sell the double braid, and the coated chain adds another 10'. We sail in freshwater so, I agree its ugly but.
We have a friend who took ALL the plastic coating off! :)
