Anchor chain size for 356

I have a 2003 H356 with the original Simpson Lawrence windlass. Does anyone know the chain size for that model. I measure the link as best I can and it looks like 5/16" thick. Can anyone confirm? I would like to increase the amount of chain. Thanks.

Nearly every 30-42 foot boat uses 5/16" G4 chain in the windlass. That is what my h40.5 uses. I think there is a different size that is also used but it is much less common. I think measuring the chain is an inexact science. The chain wears and depending upon the spot that you measure you will get varying answers. Look for the size and grade that is stamped on the link for the best answer.

the S-L windlass for the 356 was a special low profile model made for Hunter - it takes 5/16 BBB chain

To be sure. take the windlass apart and look for the stamp on the gypsy, or take the gypsy to the chandler and fit chain to it. Every windlass maker makes various gypsies for each model of windlass to accept different chain sizes/types.
