Beneteau 361 Istanbul
I have a Beneteau 361. My boat's chain is 60 meter 10mm caliber. I will change my chain 100 meter crome chain. I can not decided which caliber is suitable 10mm or 8 mm. 100 meter 10mm chain will put on extra 100kg in my boat. My question is 8 mm diameter suitable for my boat

Ground Tackle loads

There is an article on ground tackle loads in the Sept 2004 issue of Practical Sailor. There are two references to tables summarizing calculations for loads based on boat size vs wind velociy. Calculations are based on different measurement and assumptions. For your boat: ABYC table with loads in lbs: length Beam(sail) wind velocity (knots) 15 30 42 60 35ft 10ft 225 900 1800 3600 lbs 40ft 11ft 300 1200 2400 4800 50ft 13ft 400 1600 3200 5400 beam is more important to use than length Smith table: LOA wind velocity (knots) 21 30 42 60 36ft 135 276 540 1102 lbs anchor scope 5:1 The recommendation is that if you want to anchor in extreme conditions use ABYC otherwise use Smith. So to select your chain you need to know if rated safe working load and you also need to consider other parts of your ground tackle like line and shackles. Article ends with "..successful anchoring calls... for...good judgement based on knowledge and experience.

Ground tackle

Looks like the formatting didn't come through in my last response A 35ft boat with beam of 10ft would generate 225lbs of load in a 15knot wind. Hope that helps.

8 mm chain

Ersin, 8mm should be enought, especially if you can buy the Hy Grade chain (breaking strenght 7000 kg that is over 14.000 pounds!!)and You can benefit from the extended lenght of rode for the same weight. Hope to sail again in Your home waters after many years. Cheers, Gianenrico
