I doubt that it would work well. I have seen this before but it probably wouldn't push the boat enough in rough conditions.

Has anyone put an outboard on a Catalina 30?
I haven't but I've seen them...... if the bracket is mounted correctly it should work fine.... especially if you have full remote and tilt control... bringing the backet and motor up might be a challenge.... perhaps an actuator of some kind like they use on power boats.

I agree with the idea of fixing the engine. You will be far better off going with the original power source. Remember, you are dealing with a 10,000 pound boat dry weight. It is probably over 12,000 in cruising weight with full equipment, water, and supplies.

One thing that the Catalina 30 tends to do in waves is it can hobby horse. This will make the outboard far more inefficient and it will bring the prop out of the water, reving the engine to high RPMs.

The engines on these boats aren't too bad to work on. There is a ton of information out there on them. Do yourself a favor and stick with what works and how the boat was designed.

There really isn't an easy way to mount an outboard low enough due to the transom shape of the older style cat 30... Ou would really need a very long shaft to keep the prop in the water.... Forget about using it in even moderate swells...

If the cat 30 has an atomic 4, just visit The Moyer marine forums ... Most old a4s can be revived with a little love... He'll, I've come to really enjoy mine...
