Hey all,
First of all - brand new to the forum. Just found it this morning, spent a while reading, and loved the way the community felt. I had no idea what was being said half the time, but I could tell that everyone had a good spirit about them
I'm also brand new to boating. My grandfather has had a few small boats (never sail) so I've been on those, but never a sailboat. I've been excited about doing some long-term sailing for the past year or so, but I'm finally able to purchase a boat of my own.
Right now my girlfriend and I are backpacking through Central America - right now in Belize just about to head over to San Pedro/Caye Caulker.
While here in C.A., I'd love to meet people with their own sailboats that might have a thing or two to teach. Heck, we might even be able to crew in exchange for the experience if you're willing to take on complete newbies.
But back on topic, my question revolves around where to start. There's just so much information here on these forums and the internet as a whole, I'm just not sure where to start yet.
Finding book stores in Belize is difficult, so if most of my information came from online, that would be best. I imagine San Pedro will have a few, or at least some Marina's that can point me in the right direction.
So, where would you recommend a complete newbie get started? What should I read? Who should I talk to? That sort of thing.
I know that's a BIG question, so I'll try to help out by giving a few details about what we're hoping to do.
We're hoping to find a boat for under $5,000. Something we can fix up once we get back to the States. We're from Florida, so we'll be able to take some classes during the time we're fixing up the boat.
I want a live aboard boat that can handle months with two full-time sailors. We'll probably sail just the east coast of the US until we feel we're ready to head further on south. And eventually, we're planning on doing a "round-the-world" tour.
Hopefully that will give you some idea as to what we're hoping to accomplish, and where to point us to find some good info.
Thanks so much in advance for all your answers!
