I am new to smaller sailboats having larger boats with powerful inboard engines. I have a 1981 Hunter 25 with a 9.9 Evinrude engine now. How much chain can I use and still get an anchor to set with an outboard? I would think to much chain and the anchor would not set just relying on the chains weight. I have 50 feet of chain I plan to use but I am concerned with getting an anchor to set with such limited power. Maybe it is not an issue as I have never heard of to much chain on larger boats. I plan on a 15lb CQR and 12lb Danforth as anchors.

Don't Worry

I've a 240 w/8 hp outboard. Have never dragged either my 8 lb. Danforth or 14 lb. plough. The 9.9 has "limited power" relative to a much larger engine, but not relative to a 25-foot light displacement sailboat. Your anchors will bite.

8-10' plenty

I have a H26' with 11# Fortress and it sets everytime with 10' chain in mud and sand. I go for 7:1 scope.
