Did anyone watch the Americans cup race against the Italians? What did you think? Every time Paul Cayard fell behind, he used the excuse that the italians had more money, and more time to prepare. This is true however he had the 4 to 3 lead and lost both races I think, because of poor quessing on what part of the course to sail on at the start. Both times from the start during the last two races, they were behind from the start, and never were able to catch the italians who deserve much credit considering their lack of experience. What a disappointment. Thanks,,Richard

Italians deserved the win!

I watched several of the races and thought that the Italian team always sailed well, Paul Cayard made several mistakes and a couple of them involved fouls resulting in penalty turns. I did not see the Italian team do one 270. I tried to be impartial while watching this series, however, the newscasters were so biased even interpreting Cayards screw ups as good tactics! From where I sat the best boat/team one.

Italians used olive oil

I think that the Italians have the superior boat and maybe faster than the Kiwi's too. I think that Cayard actually had the better crew. Most of the losses by the Italians were tactical errors. Sure to wish those stinkin' Yanks would have pulled it out. I could have been sitting in SF Bay watching the races in person in just a few years. Oh s--t I may be 60 by the time they get a chance to be in SF. Oh well we may be renaming the America's Cup to Pasta Bowl! My guess is the Italians 5-3.

Viva Italia!

The coverage was good -- I thought it was a live broadcast, but I was probably wrong. Never figured out the time difference exactly. From my point of view the Italians earned their win. They did have one 270 in the series, but they were so far in front on that race that it didn't hurt them. Their spinnakers also stayed together better. Prada is definitely going to take the cup. They've been racing competitively while the Kiwis have been sorting out the first string players from the backups. All that experience is going to pay off. Hey -- maybe Hunter can subsidize shipping our boats as cargo & we can have a rally in Italy? It'd be some great publicity to have a fleet of Hunters in the spectators. Disappointed in Paul

After watching all the races, I was generally pleased with the quality of the racing - moreso than the coverage which would cut out significant portions of some of the legs - but after a terrible race 7 for the Italians, race 8 was quite a comeback - even giving AmericaOne a dose of their own medicine with a false jibe. I think the Italians simply out-raced AmericaOne in the last 2 races and deserved to win. Until the closing comments, I thought Paul C was a gracious sportsman, and then he had to spoil it all by making excuses for his loss. If he was over-committed, then perhaps he should not have been leadiing the campaign, but he didn't seem to have a problem earlier in the series when winning 3 in a row. Come on Paul, why not just admit that you were beaten fair and square. Don't give up on the Kiwis so readily. New Zealanders are tough competitors in all their sports, and I'd like to see a few races before deciding who has the best chance. I'm not a betting man, but if I were, I'd put my money on the Kiwis. Few Americans...

...are good losers??? But, "dadgummit" I hate to see any yachtsman making excuses; it's just not good for us. Prada definitely deserved/earned every bit of the Louis. A1's mistakes were not only sloppy, but often. Even embarassing. I thought they might pull it out after calling the correct side of the course and no mistakes 3 races in a row, but it was not to be. I thought the strategy and sail experience of the A1 crew would prove to be the deciding factor; have to rethink that for America's Cup. All-in-all, a real disappointment. BUT, I'm all for a Hunter Spectator Fleet at the next one. I nominate Phil, Hank, and Mike Cohn to organize the whole thing. <duck> Any votes?

New World Order

After watching all the races I agree with the comment that the best boat and crew won the LV Cup. Notwithstanding Cayard's whining I thing A-One did provide Prada with the level of competition they'll need to beat the Kiwis. Remember, in the last LV and America's cup New Zealand's boat was so much faster than everybody else's they never had to race. If Prada and NZ are even in speed then Prada will win. Now if Prada wins what if they make the next defense a European Defense (The EU is almost a country) rather than just Italy. How might that raise the level of sailing? What if the US does its Olympic Basketball trick and puts together a dream team or two rather than send six underfunded yacht clubs. (Forget about the NYYC they're paying for 132 years of bad karma.) Go Prada and come on 2003... Jim "Prospect"
