I did not see a better forum to start this, so it is to my Cat 30 friends I write this.

The 33dr America's Cup Challange being held off Valencia, Spain.

There is NO US TV coverage at all. WTF? Here we have an American challenger against the present cup holding Swiss Aligni group. There is a live feed at:

Never before state of the art mega catamaran vs trimaran, unlike ever seen before sailing. The BMW Oracle TRI, with it's split main design (an airplane wing design)

It's like NASA compared to Joshua Slokem, A thousand years ahead in advanced technology.

Sailing in 6KTS of wind with speeds of 22-25kts! Bmw with it’s 100 ft amas span barely keeping the tri's center hull in the water. What a site.

But alas, we have to contend with TV coverage of such great sporting events such as FUTBOL, GOLF, GOLF, GOLF, old NBA, BASEBALL, and the like. I don't know bout you guys but this sucks.

I have to go now, my 1966 game 5 of the world series is coming on. Wouldn’t want to miss that for the world. I hope this upsets you guys too.

BMW won the first 2 races by 3500+ meters. WOW........

Then that must mean it's all OVER. You can go back to your baseball game now. Heck, it's not on TV because it started at one o'clock in the morning, PST. Jeez...:):):)

As much as I think the America's Cup is ruined for good I find those multihulls truly amazing. I also find it amusing how there are only three sailors on each boat that are actually representing their home country. Is the proper term for them "token patriots"?

I agree pal. They need to change the rules that you need to be a citizen of that country to participate.

But was that NASA type technology?

It is now 5;00 pm Spain time & the race is over. GMT time minus 1 hour is Valencia Spain time.

For the life of me Stu, what is your major malfunction?

Why is it I find myself in defensive positions since joining this group?
Funny thing is that people who ask for insight for the most part seem happy with constructive input I offer.

Then there are others that seem to revel in taking opposite positions. For the life of me, I see no constructive end in this.

Sailing is personal & diverse for all. If folks are not in agreement, so be it. However, what's to gain by playing devil's advocate. Or disagreeing to disagree?

I remember in earlier threads of agreeing with your input. When did the change take place?

With your present attitude man, no need for a reply.
You know I subscribed to this site because of my knowledge and to help other owners avoid problems in areas they did not feel comfortable with.

But then are the replies I get with all this opposition. My intent was but to help, not filter adversity.

In my years of experience, I no longer need to defend my position. I know what I do and have witnessed alot. Knowledge comes from learning, and I've paid my dues.

Maybe you should keep your responses geared to people who ask you directly for your input and not to me? So far as my joining this group, I am quite surprised by the negativity of my fellow boaters..............And you know who you are.

Why the resistance? I thought the goal was to better the group?

Ron, Sorry. Come visit us when they hold the next AC here on SF Bay. Really. Your posts are always helpful and well written. Don't let me scare you away.

Thanks man.

You know, I always wanted to sail SF bay. I've spoken with bay sailors over the years and always wanted to take part in YOUR unique sailing conditions. I'v been told that if you can sail SF bay, you can sail anywhere!

As a footnote, I've read alot of your advice and found it exerienced & right-on.

ps: The good news: we are the cup owners AGAIN!

That's what they say, but I've come to the conclusion that we're just plain spoiled rotten here with all the wind we get. As you know, they claim the hard sailing is really when there's little or no wind - drives ya nuts, right? The winter is rather mellow here, and while I'm still recovering from my broken leg and second surgery in August and haven't been out on the boat much, I'm really looking forward to this springtime. Bay sailing, anchoring out, ocean sailing, the Delta, yup- it's going to be a busy season for me, playing catch up. You're welcome anytime, even before the Cup gets here. I echo the sentiment of someone on the parallel thread - I was out near the Golden Gate Bridge a few years ago when Ellison and other A cup monohulls were racing on the Bay. I hove to and watched then scream by at "only" 12 knots - boy, were they big and fast - back then! 20 knots in 6 knot breeze - whew! I sure hope the rumor that Larry is thinking of the east coast is completely wrong. Where else but here?

Someone "borrowed" my VHS tape of Captn. Ron. I remain "Ron-less" and should really hit Amazon and get a DVD.

San Francisco Bay has its unique parts, but so does the Chesapeake Bay. True you spend a lot of time in light air, but then there are those days when it blows all stink, the waves chum up and they are tall and steep, and the current turns against the wind and waves and makes it even nastier. I have met some cruisers that have sailed all over the place and say that they went through a nasty patch of weather at Pt. Lookout, MD and said it was as bad as the storms they hit in the open sea.

Stu & Bad,

There's a commonality in our respective sailing areas. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,

Perfect One-Tack days.....(The Good)
Opposite wind/Wave conditions more of a rodeo ride.........(The Bad)
25-45kt storms, Thunderheads w/Lightning.........(The Ugly)

However, as they say, "What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger".
And, what we all share in common is that sense of adventure & passion that frees us from our daily routines.

We are part of a very small select group of which 99.9% of the world's masses will never get to experience. Then there are those moments of magic, in being at the right place & time to view all of natures' glory. You guys know what I mean. There is enrichment for us in this.

I'll bet it's why we’re always inviting folks to come sail with us. Share the experience. Ya gotta admit it’s a great club to be a member of.

Stu, Hope you mend quickly and, The Cup should stay in SF.

Bad, Keep an eye out for Pt. Lookout………
