Replacing a previous compression post repair. In place now is a piece of stained 4x4. Have purchased 3/4" teak to wrap new compression post after installation. Any thoughts on using aluminum tube stock, pressure treated 4x4, solid aluminum? Wiring afterward is a concern. Will hide all in the space and also want to run wire/cable for future radar installation. No indication of water penetration at this time and upper rib shows no damage. Will probably install pvc through deck for wires and still undecided on connections above deck or down below in starboard settee. All advice is appreciated. I am taking pictures of all this interior work and will post at a later date. Right now I'm racing the cold weather just around the corner.

Old photo Archive

I recall an old photo archive with some very good photos of a compression post replacement- I think it was a H34. I remember looking at it when I was doing some research before buying our 34 6 years ago. The replacement post was a SS ( i think) post probably about 4" dia best I can recall. I dont know what became of some of these older archives- Phil?

If I could redesign the mast wiring connection from scratch I would design it so the connection is made below in the ceiling. Then when the mast was to be removed there would be no fingers and hands under a suspended mast. The trick would be to get a connection that would not let water in but would allow for the connectors to pull through when taking the mast down. Alternately I would do as I have done and make an opening with a cover near the mast bottom to pull the connetions out and connect or disconnect when the mast is in place on the base. Fred Ficcara has a picture of an opening and cover on his site. He bought the cover from, I believe, Rigite. Being a do it your self kind of guy I made mine:)

If you do a Google search for "mast wiring through deck" you will see some more ideas.
good luck- looking forward to your pictures

Definately not wood again!

Even if pressure treated I'd stay away from wood again. Best would be either carbon steel of stainless steel, but not aluminum (not good in high compression). As for shapes, either pipe of tube steel (box shape) are best. A piece of SS pipe would be quick, easy and relatively cheap. Also recommend you have a base and top plate welded on.
