Aluminum plates glassed into deck?

On my H27 there are raised areas (about a 1/2") on the deck where hardware is attached, for blocks and clutches. Are these raised areas aluminum plates and and is the hardware drilled and tapped into the aluminum rather than through bolted?

Year of production?

I am not aware of aluminum plates being embedded in the '75-84 Cherubini h27. The later model may be a different story. David Lady Lillie

it's an 84

perhaps the raised areas are plywood. They are located at the mast base, deck organiser, main sheet blocks and clutch locations. but i thought i heard someone say that they were aluminum and that new deck hardware could be drilled and tapped. Dan

Aluminum on 81' H30

I just upgraded my mainsheet on my 81' H30 this weekend and there were definitely aluminum plates glassed inthe the hardpoints on my boat. I put in 2 deck organizers, a pad eye plate behind the mast, and new traveller cleats and fairleads, and all locations had aluminum plates in the galss.

thru bolt or drill and tape?

Did you through bolt your new hardware or drill and tape treads into the aluminum?

The reinforced areas on your deck are covering an aluminum backing plate. Drill

Whole mast step?

I want to get a little more specific here for other reasons. Square - You said you added a pad eye plate behind the mast. So are you saying that on your boat, the raised " T " shaped mast step is cored with an aluminum plate? I have seen archives where people have replaced the wood with aluminum plates, but I'm interested to know if this was a factory practice also ( likely in later years, as my 78H30 is/was cored with rotted plywood ). Also, I'm leaning to thinking that the only purpose for the " T " shape was to mount blocks etc, and not for structural purposes. Any thoughts? Thad, what year is your H30?

my installation techniques

What I did for my installation was 2 things. For the pad eye, I through bolted the plate and used a backing plate (4"X6"X1/4" stainless steel). I wetted out the holes I drilled with West System Epoxy to help keep water out. I then used 4200 series marine caulk to seal the top and bottom plates and the bolt heads. For the deck organizers, clam cleats and fairleads I used Epoxy plugs. I drilled a full depth (depth the fastner sees at final installation) hole the size of the bolt, and then drilled a larger hole 3/4 depth of the smaller hole. I then coat the bolts in a thin layer of wax and then screw them in enough to "stand up" in the holes. I then fill the holes with West Epoxy and allow them to dry. Sometimes more than one layer of Epoxy is required . The wax lets me extract the screws after the epoxy hardens and then I have a full depth set of threads for my bolts. I finish up by adding a thin layer of gelcoat over the epoxy plug, and then seal everything up with 4200 caulk. Let me know if you have any questions.
