We have a 2002 Catalina 36 with a Universal 35B . It has the original alternator . It is functioning fine but i am concerned it is on borrowed time , 900 engine Hours .

The batterie bank consists of 2 - 8D and 1 starting batterie that is deep cycle .

Question is , is it time time to replace with a smart alternator or rebuild the one we have and install a separate regulator ?

Cost aside what is the best way to go ?

Look around for a backup and keep on the boat, I have
A 60 amp alternator and found a really good price on a new 80 amp on ebay and have in on my engine and keep my 60 amp on the boat as backup.

I don't think 900 hrs. is very much run time for an alternator, I wouldn't expect it to fail anytime soon. My former boat was a '94 that still has the original, over 20 years old.

Your alternator is just a pup, plenty of useful hours on her unless you have abused the pulley bearings. Electromaxx and Balmar both make improved alternators that will fit your mounts, but there are no shortcuts here, do an energy budget, look at your storage, and develop a systems plan. An alternator is just a piece of that.
