Alternator problem

So I accidentally crossed my battery wires and damaged my alternator diodes. There is now a short between the hot leg from the starter motor and the r/b wire on the ignition switch that runs to the alternator. Does anyone know if the alternator is fixable or must it be replaced?

Pull your alternator off and take to a automobile alternator shop. They can open it up and replace the diodes.

Jim's right on. Do mention that it is a marine

application. It very possibly is just a standard automotive alternator although it would be nice if it actually was a marine unit. They will know and should be able to fix either.Marine and industrial types charge more at lower RPM's and therefore are better for that type of use.RayPS. Mark the terminals major league for future times and always unhook NEG first and then POS. When hooking up always hook up POS first and NEG last. Having covers over the terminals are good ideas if used. Sparks are expensive as you know.

But before you do that

label and diagram you wires well so you don't refry it when you put it back on. Some shops may try to sell you a re-built unit that is the same capacity but may have different wire fittings.I'd ask to have yours rebuilt-tell them its of old gramps favorite tractor and you want to keep it as close to orginal as possible. If they ask you what kind-'bout a 20 hp John Deere! (Yanmar makes 'em)
