Alternator Issues

Well, my baby is finally wet! All went well despite the winds in moving her from Sandusky to Catawba Saturday even though I had an air bubble in the fuel line...which was quickly diagnosed and fixed on the fly, much to the amazement of my powerboating neighbors (LOL). But I noticed that the tachometer and the amp meter weren't working...when I checked the bank one battery, it hadn't charged at all! I am assuming my alternator is shot. Any ideas as to where I can get one affordable, and is that a reason for the tachometer to not work? I am still running the original M25 engine in her. Thanks for all the help and support! Griffin.

Battery Shack

There is an outfit named Battery Shack Marine that is supposed to have alternators that fit all configurations. I have never done business with them but have seen write up's. I checked their web site and the prices seem reasonable and as per customer's evaluations, they are easy to work with. As to your tach, I don't have one on my boat and I don't know anything about how they are set up. Good Luck.

Thanks JB

You know, as I have said, this is a new boat... I found one stray wire and connected it to the alternator...what do you know, the blasted thing works. I still can't figure out the Tachometer though...It spins when I am starting the thing, but goes dead once it is started... Any other ideas would be apprecaited! Thanks! Griffin.

Not Sure

I'm guessing now. As diesels do not need electricity to run, I believe that the tach is mechanical and operates off of a cable and not electrical impulse. If it is mechanical you might check both ends of cable. It's possible that the grease is cool when you first start up the engine and when it warms up the gears on one end of the cable starts slipping. My boat didn't come with a tach and I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I do know that there are mechanical tach's and you might have one of them.
