Howdy from Houston! Our 1982 H54 is still sailing, but the alternator went out. The Universal dealer want $700+ for a new one, but we can buy a replacement for around $75 - the question is - what is the correct make and model number for the alternator. The engine is a Universal Atomic 50 -which is really a fine Kubota tractor 44 hp diesel engine, with a Universal sea water cooling jacket. I did find out that the alternators are made in Korea, and are of high quality, but the one I bought online has a 15 amp output, and the old one was about 12 amps or so. This would fry the batteries I think. I sure hope someone can tell me the correct info on this! Many thanks from Texas, JHT

for about 150 dollar more you could get a 70 amp balmar and charge controler and have a very good alt system ...but if you dont want to spend that much money i would take the alt to a auto electric shop and see if they can rebuild it may be nothing more than a blown diode

Hi Woody and thanks... I cannot find a Balmar alternator on the big Discount Starters and Alternators website... Do you have more info on the make and model number of this one? Your help is very welcomed, as we are trying to cast off on our 30th annual cruise down to Port Aransas... Many thanks, JHT

Woody - Yikes, I just found them online... $2,000 down to $750 - Marine Alternators, that makes them very expensive... (;D

i have seen kits for as little as about 850.00..including the external regulator from time to time ..you may want to read mainsails write up on balmar alts and regs its is very enlightening and you will better understand about alts abroad especially for a boat your size you need all the charging power you can get under way and it will also tell you about how that system will take better care of your batteries glad you got it fixed and what i just stated is very good food for thought for in the future have a great trip
