Balmar High Output Alternator around $450
I switched from the Yanmar alternator to one made by Balmar. I am very impressed with the unit, (and no, I don't work for them!) It was a "bolt-on" installation. Check www.balmar.net for applications. Balmar was also very good on the phone with any questions. The regulator that I bought through Boat U.S. is the Balmar 90-100D. The alternator has 2 charging outputs, allowing it to be connected to two seperate battery banks, charging each as needed, without the battery selector switch or battery isolators. It will charge the battery bank that needs the charge most, either diverting 100 amps to one, the other, or dividing it between both banks. Pretty neat, cost through West or Boat U.S. is around $450.00You do have to use an external voltageregulator. Balmar makes several for between $170-220. Those regulators are multi-stage, and have seperate settings specifically designed for gels, lead-acid, etc. And, the model I bought, waits to turn the alternator on until the engine has been running for 30 seconds, to make starting easier. So rather than spend $900 to replace the original, you might as well get more output, more convenience, for less money.
