I recently purchased a upgraded 60 amp alternator to replace the original 35 amp alternator on my Yanmar 3GM. The foot of the alternator bolts up correctly but the adjustment bracket needs to be a little more offset and longer for adjustment. Does anyone know a good source?

I'm thinking of using a longer bolt, measured 1.625" spacer, and a readily available slightly curved adjustment bracket.

Any thoughts or suggestions on source.

Is the adjustment bracket indexed on the block? By that I mean if you loosen the bolt affixing the bracket to the block can you pivot the bracket on the block and re torque in a slightly different position?(I assume only 1 bolt as that's all that shows in your photo)

If so it looks like re-positioning your existing bracket and a shorter belt could work.

Unless of course the unit is laying against the mount in the photo and cannot come in any more, in that case a longer adjustment is needed. Auto salvage yards and welding skills are great resources to have in situations like these:)

Good luck.

Are you sure you got all the spacers on the pivot bolt correctly placed?
also it looks like it would work with the adjuster bolt just going in from the other (back) side. hard to tell from the pictures.

Around my little corner of America(never been to NJ) I would go to Napa Auto parts and find the oldest most experienced counterman, and show him the pictures or the part and ask him what he has on the shelf or in the book that looks like it would work. Try his suggestions and return them for a full refund if they do not work.

By the time you modify that Defender part(which very well could work BTW) you will be unable to do anything but throw it in the garbage can on the way home from the marina if you cannot make it work. By modify I mean bend it to fit and cut off any excess material.

I would not under any circumstances go to anyplace with "Marine" in the title. It's an alternator bracket, not a seacock.

did the same thing

A while back. If memory serves, I used the stock bracket, and just moved it to another mounting spot. Any of the bolts in that area of the block, are long enough to allow you to move the bracket to another location. I think I had to lower the bracket on mine.

I thought the same thing, still won't be long enough, and the depth between the face of the mounting hole on the block to the tab on the alternator is greater with the other mounting locations.

I like the idea of going to napa to see what they got. But as you know if you don't get the right seasoned counterman they will new telling you they can't looke it up without a year and make of your vehicle....

We have a small independent auto parts house that has been around about 50+ years that caters primarily to professional independent shops. As its on the other side of town(40 minute trip) I use it as a last resort. Perhaps if you ask around or perhaps look in the local phone book for the smaller auto parts shops you may have a similar one in your area. Not much to look at but the counter help is outstanding with huge depth of knowledge and unreal inventory in the back room. Our local Napa guy is a former employee of theirs and is pretty darn good. He wont tolerate his counterman relying solely on the computer.

Avoid the other large chain stores for the reason you outlined, no offense but they typically lack depth of experience on the counter.
