Hi,
Looks like the old combi is about to give up the ghost, can anyone advise on a replacement engine type. I have details on the new beta but was looking for a cheaper option.

It seems pretty hard to get a 'deal' on a Diesel. I don't know what part of the world you're in, but you could try a used one, or one like this one on eBay

but it may be a bit underpowered for a Vega.

Here's anothe eBay listing, but this one may be a bit too big!

A used engine is always a gamble, even if it's advertised as 're-built'.

Maybe consider an outboard as a temporary measure?

Are you still running the original Albin gas (petrol) engine?

Thanks for that peter, yes its still the original gas engine im afraid. Im based in scotland and have looked on various websites inc ebay but im not to sure which engines are compatable. I think the yanmar 1gm is and i know about the beta but the brand new cost is more than i can really afford.

Most small engines will fit.

I reckon the 1GM is too small at 9hp. I know of a second-hand Beta being sold in scotland for about £1000 - £1200 as the guy is putting a 20hp in his Vega. Keeps his Vega on the West Coast, name is Keith Patrick and his boat is Rough Diamond. Let me know if you want his phone number.

Scott,
My Vega also had the Albin gas engine, but was converted to Diesel by a previous owner, about 1984, to a 13 HP Yanmar 2GMF, which fits in there quite well, and works well for the Vega.
