Alternate Boom Stowing Methods

Hey Guys and Gals, While packing our goods for a vacation a week ago, I once again questioned alternate stowing methods for the boom. My pickup bed was full and the boat was full. I did not hang the boom from the mast rack and the mast as stock. I really do not like that arrangement. What do I do with the boom? Anyway, I have an idea that I stole from a buddy that sailed with me last week. He has a Hobie 16. On his trailer he has mounted a section of 10" x 7' schedule 80 PVC, between the pontoons. After loading the Cat onto his trailer he wraps his sail around the boom and slides the entire unit into the PVC and closes off both ends. I do not need 10" PVC, 4" should work just fine (my measurement show we need 3 1/2" inside diameter), as I do not plan to wrap the sail around it. This unit would be mounted lengthwise just inside and above the spring mounts, to the frame of the trailer. Both ends sealed with screw off caps. Before putting this together, I wanted to see how others store the boom. I really do not like it hanging (and swinging off the mast), and in my Super Duty Short Box it just fits diagonally (if I want to get the cover closed). Not a problem if the bed is not full. Anyone out there have any good alternate methods? Thanks. Godspeed, Rusty

boom

I personally keep it where I was instructed when I bought the boat....one end in the mast support at the end of the boat and the rest of it strapped and bungied to the mast. I also keep the mainsheet connected to it and semi-snug to give it some extra stability. In fact, this approach seems to make the mast more stable as well, compared to trailering w/out the boom.

Boom stowage for trailering

Rusty, Trust you had fun 'up north'! Just wanted to say hi, and I agree with the PVC idea. I've seen many a Prindle being trailered (with boom in PVC) this way here in Florida. For the record, I still just use that standard mast rack...with my new rear-boom sheeting (photos to come on this site), I prefer the convenience of leaving it all somewhat "intact". I'm about to post a discussion point re: my 170 outting this past weekend. Best, Mike
