Hello all, I have an Alpha Marine 4404 Auto-Pilot that came with my boat (P36-2). It is a below deck unit, however is not functioning as most of the wires in the back of the unit were disconnected. I am sending the entire unit (including loran interface) to the company for a disagnostic check up. Any opinions / experience with these units? I never hear mention of this brand when the discussion comes up. Thanks! Greg

Nobody has an opinion or experience. I guess that is how limited the use of these is

Not necessarily

they're reputed to be robust professional grade units, used by serious ocean racers and cruisers. Given all the negativity related to Autohelm Raymarine ST4000s, it seems that unit is what many of the respondents on this board have on their wheel steered coastal cruisers. It could just well be that those who have Alphas are out there cruising in warmer weather rather than typing up a storm right here!!! :) Rmember, one bad word about something doesn't make it bad, and no input doesn't denote anything at all.

I had an Alpha Marine 3000 autopilot on my Morgan Catalina 43 back during the 90's. It was outstanding. I put it on the boat after doing a Carribbbean 1500 in 1991 aboard a Mason 44 whose captain had just installed same unit. I was amazed at how flawlessly it steared the Mason 44 for 11 days in open ocean conditions from Cape Henry to the Virgina Islands. When I bought my H-420 in '01 I was pretty much forced to go with Raymarine as that is all Hunter offers. So I upgraded to an (Autohelm) 7000. It's good, but not as good as the Alpha; IMHO !
