While sailing on the Southern of Narragansett Bay Saturday in my O'Day 22, we heard a loud metallic sound like cans being stepped on. Then the side stays went slack. One side of the starboard chain plate had failed and had pulled out ~ 1!". This had me pretty concerned as we we're quit a ways away from port which Is in the upper bay. So I ran a line from the mast base through the port side hand rail under the hull and back up to the stays affixed a pulley and pulled it tight. We then reefer the main and sailed an hour and a half back to the mooring.
Thanks to Rudy of D&R for taking care of me so that I could fix it before the storms yesterday.
